Police Helping Highland Community
Gastonia Police are doing just that with the help of the Street Crimes Unit and Sgt. Mike Smith. Smith has been identifying abandoned homes and contacting landlords in the neighborhood to keep the homes from becoming drug dens, said Sgt. Jeff Clark.

“Our biggest problem, by and large, is not the people who live in these communities,” Clark said. “It’s the people who drive in to use and buy drugs that are causing a lot of the problems for the folks who just want to raise their families.”

Chief Terry Sult told residents that police will work to keep children away from guns, gangs and drugs and that officers will help those already involved a way out.

“And there’s a third option,” Sult said referring to problem criminals. “Throw them in jail.”
